Issue one · Nine titles · Free to play

We watch how a game opens.

SceneProbe is an editorial desk for free-to-play titles on Google Play. We take the first screen seriously — what it shows, how quickly it moves, how long it asks you to stay — and write it down in plain words.

Pick by mood, not by chart

Five ways into the issue. No cards here, no ranking — just the kind of screen you are in the humour for, and where it turns up below.

  1. Rooms that keep their secrets

Escape rooms and hidden-object scenes. The screen holds still, the light is warm, and progress is a matter of noticing. Two titles in this issue open on a door that will not budge.

  2. Pieces before pictures

Jigsaw and art puzzles. Both start scattered and end calm, and neither hurries you along. Good for a kitchen table, a train, or the ten minutes before something else begins.

  3. A kitchen with a metronome

Cooking simulation, timed but soft-spoken. Sound carries most of the staging: a knife, a pan, a kettle coming up to the boil. The clock is there to give the scene a rhythm, not to shout at you.

  4. Weight, angle, bounce

Arcade and casual titles built on physics you can read at a glance. Aim, release, watch it land. Restarts are instant, which is most of the appeal.

  5. Room to wander

Adventure and simulation with space left in the frame. These open on a horizon rather than a tutorial, and they trust you to walk towards something on your own.

Nine titles, one screen at a time

Everything below is a free download on Google Play. The star figures are copied from each store page as read in Ireland; the notes beside them are ours, written after sitting with the opening of each game.

Questions we get

Short answers, and none of them hiding anything.

Yes. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to pay. Every page is open to anyone who lands on it, and no part of the issue sits behind a wall.
